Archbishop Wood 9, Wissahickon 7

Dec 5, 2013 @ 12:54PM – ARCHBISHOP WOOD 9, WISSAHICKON 7

LINK: http://www.suburbanonesports.com/article/content/sol-shshl-ice-hockey-wrap-12-4-13-0039759

Defense has been noticeably scarce in the Suburban High School Hockey League this season, as have Archbishop Wood victories after six games this year.
While a defensive effort was still completely absent on Wednesday night, the Vikings were able to figure out a way to get past first-place Wissahickon, winning 9-7 in an American Conference matchup at Bucks County Ice Sports Center.
Wissahickon’s Luke Honorowski tallied five goals, but Archbishop Wood was able to get the victory thanks to goals from eight different players, including the game-winner from Jonathan Rosica.
“That was a very big win,” Rosica said.  “We had lost our goalie to injury, but now that he’s back, we can get back to our old ways like last year and just start winning hockey games.  We had to play more defense and not be an offense-based team.”

The offense was certainly on display on Wednesday, as the two teams went back and forth from the very beginning, with very little defense showing on either side of the ice.
“We can put that many goals in, but you have to learn to play better defense to win hockey games,” Wissahickon coach Mike Wolf said.  “They’re a good team, but we’re a better team than we showed tonight and when we get our guys back, it will be a different story.”

Wood started the scoring when Jonathan Pfugfelder took a pass from Matt Mandes and buried it past Wissahickon goalie Noah Katz less than five minutes into the contest to put the Vikings up 1-0.  The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the period, finishing in a 3-3 tie before the break.

The second period belonged to the Vikings, as Troy Potts, Nick Patton, Mandes and Brett Katzianer all scored goals to help Wood to a 7-4 lead late in the stanza. Honorowski scored his third goal of the game to get Wissahickon to within two before the second intermission.

The Trojans mounted a comeback in the third period, as Honorowski scored his fourth and fifth goals of the night, but the Vikings answered, as Rosica and Brett Katzianer scored just over a minute apart to help Wood to go back up 9-7 late in the game.

“This win definitely gives us something to look back on,” Rosica said.  “We can look at what we did to a first-place team as almost a last-place team, and it should definitely help us moving forward.”
“They’re a good hockey team,” Wolf said of the Vikings. “We didn’t play defense and they did.  They possessed the puck and we didn’t.  They scored more goals on second and third opportunities and while we had some nice goals, you can’t win them all.”

Despite the loss, Honorowski’s play was exceptional, as the forward tallied five goals on the night to give him a season total of 20 goals and 29 points in just seven games this season.
“Luke is a hard, hard worker,” Wolf said.  “He’s a very, very hard worker.”
Dustin Rabinowitz tallied one goal and three assists for Wissahickon in the losing effort.  Honorowski recorded a power play and a shorthanded goal in his big night, while Matt Vervlied finished with a game-high four assists for the Trojans.  Jacob Segelbaum also scored once for Wissahickon, which had won three games in a row before Wednesday.
Rabinowitz now has nine goals and 12 assists on the season to put him in second place on the Trojans in points.
The Vikings were led by Matt Mandes, who finished with two goals and two assists.  Patrick Cavanaugh scored once and added two assists, while Nick DeRosa earned the win in net.
