1972 – The First Year for Wood Ice Hockey History

From the earliest days of the Suburban High School League, students from Archbishop Wood High school have participated in the program with distinction.

During the leagues infant year, 1972-1973 when the only eligibility rule was that the players attend a high school, four Vikings skated for the Willow Grove team. By 1974 there were 25 Wood Students playing and they constituted the first “pure” high school team in the league. This first Viking team carried out banner well and will be long remembered for the enthusiasm, skill and high standard of conduct they brought to the game as they skated to within one game of the league championship.

Now in our third season as a team, the Viking Ice Hockey Club numbers 56 boys skating on three teams, one at varsity level and two at the junior varsity level.

The number of boys involved in the program is impressive but they along with the staff working with, Doug Burns, Ray Reinl, Jim Spinello, Hank Fox and John Boyle know that quality, not quantity is goal. To this end, we are dedicated to developing players that by their conduct, on and off the ice and their skill in playing the game will bring honor to the teams and the school community.

Wood Wins the 42nd Annual Jim Bagdon Cup

Game recap of the 42nd Annual Jim Bagdon Cup (formerly Warminster Cup) ice hockey game between the Archbishop Wood Vikings and William Tennent Panthers was played at 7pm on November 22nd in front of a lot of passionate fans at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center. The game was in honor of Gerry Grandzol, a ’97 graduate of Wood who died tragically on September 7th, 2017. This game was one for the ages!

The Vikings started off strong with Brayden Gyza scoring the only goal in the first period assisted by Justin Carrelli and Ben Doran. With solid puck control in the offensive zone, Ben Doran scored the Vikings second goal assisted by Justin Carrelli. Wood’s offensive line consisting of Tommy Hill, Ty Thornton, and Andrew Boyle applied good pressure but were kept at bay with solid defensive play by the Panthers and excellent goaltending by Eric Lineman. Tennent answered a few minutes later in the period with a goal by Chad Cartwright assisted by Jon Kreider.

Then Ben Doran scored his second goal on a power play assisted by Justin Carrelli and Brayden Gyza to make it 3-1 Vikings at the end of the second period.

The Vikings defense consisting of Ryan Kinney, Nick Romano, Sean Boehm, and Marisa Denucci were doing a good job keeping the puck out of the zone. Then Panthers Tom Hartenstein took advantage of an opportunity and scored to make it 3-2 in the third period. Ben Doran answered with his third goal and hat trick assisted by Justin Carrelli, who contributed to all the Vikings goals. This expanded the Vikings lead to 4-2 with 6:43 remaining in the third period. The Panthers were hungry and determined to come back with Chad Cartwright scoring on a power play. Then on the final face off in the Vikings zone with only one second left on the clock, Captain Bobby Markus miraculously scored for Tennent to tie the game at 4-4.

A shootout would determine who claims the legendary cup for the 2017-18 season. After four failed scoring attempts by both teams, Vikings Captain Ryan Kinney scored high blocker side on Panthers’ goalie Eric Lineman who played very well all game. Determined to extend the shootout, Panthers’ Chad Cartwright came storming in on Vikings senior goalie David Casper. David was up for the challenge and made a “Go-Go-Gadget” pad save to secure the cup for the Vikings. Congratulations to the Wood Vikings Ice Hockey Team for a fantastic finish!

Friday night battle on the ice – AB Wood @ Lansdale Catholic on Nov. 3rd, 2017

The Wood Vikings Ice Hockey team was ready for a tough battle against the Lansdale Catholic (LC) Crusaders at the Hatfield Green Ice Rink, the coldest place in town. Freshman Andrew Boyle started the regular season off with a nice goal assisted by Justin Carrelli and Ben Doran.  Then Jimmy Casper scored to make it 2-0.  The Crusaders fought right back with a goal by Nick Sexton 40 seconds later to make it 2-1 Wood at the end of the first period.

The second period was evenly matched with defenseman Sean Boehm working hard to keep the Crusader’s offense in check.   Marissa DeNucci and Assistant Captain Nick Romano also played well on defense to help limit the shots on net.  Robert Schimony scored the only goal of the second period and scored again early in the third period to make is 3-2 LC with 12:35 left in the game.

Assistant Captain Tommy Hill answered by scoring a goal assisted by Ben Doran, who was setting the table for his teammates the whole game. Wood’s holy goalie David Casper was using his size and glove to stop pucks until Nick Sexton beat him by scoring again for LC with just under 6 minutes left in the game. A few minutes later David’s younger brother Jimmy Casper shot low far post and scored with a nice assist by Brayden Gyza to tie the game at 4-4 with 3:46 left to play.

Freshman Justin Carrelli saved his best for last when he scored the game winning goal with only 19 seconds left in the game, assisted by Ben Doran. What a finish!

Next week the Vikings play a talented Roman Catholic team on Friday, November 10th, 7:40pm at Northeast Skate Zone.

AHA Showcase Game Summary

The mighty Wood Vikings battled a scrappy Tennent Panthers team on Friday, October 13th in the second game of the AHA (Athletes Helping Athletes) Hockey Showcase at Revolution Ice Gardens. Wood applied a lot pressure early in the game. Both lines of defense consisting of Ryan Kinney, Nick Romano, Sean Boehm, and Marisa Denucci were doing a good job keeping the puck in the zone. Then Bobby Marcus from Tennent had a quick breakaway and scored with 4:57 left in the first period.

Tennent’s goalie Eric Lineman was stopping everything during the game, over 40 shots, until Wood’s forward Justin Carrelli scored from a beautiful across the crease pass by Center Ben Doran with 6:14 left in the third period.  A minute later Justin scored again on a breakaway with assists by Ben Doran and Sean Boehm.

The game ended 2-1 with Wood pulling out the victory and ending a four year losing streak against the Tennent Panthers. This was a good preview for the big rival game between the two teams on November 22nd, 7:00 at BCI.

Be sure to come out and support the Wood Hockey team this Wednesday, October 18 at 8:40pm against Council Rock North at the Revolution Ice Gardens. Your donations to help the special needs athletes are greatly appreciated

2017-2018 Hockey Season

This season we will be in the PCL (Philadelphia Catholic League).  All teams in the division will be Catholic High Schools so we hope to see a lot of fans at the games to support the team against our high school rivals!

The only goalie we have this year is a senior.  This is a excellent opportunity for an upcoming freshman or 8th grader to join the Wood Hockey Team as a goalie.  The club can help out with equipment.  The current goalie started playing ice hockey as a freshman and student of the famous goalie coach Larry Paul. With some hard work and dedication you can be the next goalie for the Wood Ice Hockey Team! Please call or text me (Dave Casper) for additional information or with any questions at 267-679-2516.
